QUESTION: What load does a 3 day event put on the body compared to a one day event?
Answer: Besides the extra training and conditioning required to complete a 3 day event, it is crucial to ensure that you give your body enough fuel before, during and after each stage. Unlike a one day event where you give it your all for the duration of the race and recover for as long as you need to afterwards, a 3 day race requires you to pace yourself, refuel and recover enough between stages to prevent fatigue and DOMS- delayed onset muscle soreness. It is vital to begin conservatively, keeping within your comfort zone for stages 1 and 2 to avoid burning out before the end of the 3 days. It takes a lot of determination, both mentally and physically, to wake up with tired stiff legs and get ready to challenge your body on another stage!
QUESTION: What is the best advice you can give to a novice stage race runner?
Answer: The question most novices ask before entering a race such as the AfricanX is whether you have to have completed a full marathon beforehand. Our answer to them is no! With correct training anyone who wants to can complete a race such as the AfricanX. The best advice would be to ensure that you simulate race conditions during training. By this we mean doing some long back to back runs which conditions the body to run long on consecutive days, and by testing your race gear and nutrition. And finally learn to pace yourself correctly, taking into consideration the varied terrain that you will be running on!
